2017 Ramey Wine Cellars Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard

Seeing 20 months in 20% new barrels, the 2017 Chardonnay Woolsey Road Vineyard offers plenty of brioche and white flower nuances to go with rocking levels of Meyer lemon and tart pineapple fruit. It's rich, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, yet also has a racy spine of acidity that just about hits the tart level, yet never goes over the edge. This rocking Russian River Valley Chardonnay is going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for over a decade. It's beautiful but needs short-term cellaring.

2017 Ramey Wine Cellars Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard

From another awesome vineyard in the Russian River, the 2017 Chardonnay Rochioli Vineyard is one of the richer, more powerful Chardonnay in the lineup. Medium gold-colored, with notes of sautéed orchard fruits, brioche, honeysuckle, and lemon curd, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, good acidity, and a mouthfilling texture that keeps you coming back. It actually gains freshness and vibrancy with time in the glass and is another age-worthy, brilliant Chardonnay from Ramey I'd be happy to have in the cellar.

2017 Ramey Wine Cellars Chardonnay Westside Farms Vineyard

The smallest production Chardonnay in the lineup, the 2017 Chardonnay Westside Farms Vineyard comes from a site in the Russian River Valley and spent 20 months in 20% new French oak. As with all these 2017s from David Ramey, it reveals a vivid, medium gold hue as well as classic Chardonnay notes of white flowers, orchard fruits, flower blossom, honeysuckle, and toasted bread. The oak is nicely integrated, it's medium to full-bodied, has bright acidity, and a great, great finish. It rivals the 2016 (and is better than the 2015) and can be enjoyed any time over the coming 10-15 years.

2017 Ramey Wine Cellars Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard

Seeing the standard 20 months in 20% new French oak, the 2017 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard comes from one of the Grand Cru sites in the Russian River Valley. It has remarkable purity and elegance to go with ample richness (which is the hallmark of this site) as well as notes of ripe lemon and citrus fruits, lots of spice and crushed rock-like minerality, medium to full-bodied richness, and a great finish. It's up with the top Chardonnay in the vintage but needs 2-3 years of bottle age. It's going to be drinking brilliantly at age 15.

2017 Ramey Wine Cellars Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard

More tropical and citrus notes emerge from the 2017 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard, which has a beautiful chalky minerality as well as medium to full-bodied richness, bright, racy acidity, a crisp texture, and a great finish. With remarkable purity of fruit as well as a chiseled mouthfeel, it's another magical Chardonnay from this estate that will stand up to any Grand Cru White Burgundy out there. It has plenty to love today yet will be best with 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for over a decade.

2017 Ramey Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

As to the reds, the 2017 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley comes from a handful of sites and spent 14 months in just under 40% new French oak. Its translucent ruby color is followed by a complex, earthy effort that offers mulled strawberry and cherry fruit, notes of dried herbs, forest floor, and saddle leather, medium-bodied richness, and a great texture. This Burgundy lover’s Pinot Noir shines for its complexity and elegance more than power and richness.

2017 Ramey Wine Cellars Syrah Sonoma Coast

The 2017 Syrah Sonoma Coast has a medium purple/ruby hue as well as classic Syrah gaminess and pepperiness. With lots of blackberry fruit, some ground herb, bacon fat, and olive notes as well as medium to full-bodied richness on the palate, it's already drinking nicely and has a supple, approachable style. I would drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years or so.

2017 Ramey Wine Cellars Claret

A blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 14% Malbec, and the rest a mix of varieties, the 2017 Claret has a bright, edgy bouquet of blue fruits, graphite, toasted spice, and scorched earth. With lots of minerality, some vanilla oak, firm tannins, and medium to full body, it reminds me of a Cabernet from Ridge's Monte Bello Vineyard. It shows the firmer, more linear style of the vintage, so give bottles a year or two and enjoy over the following 7-8 years or so.
