2018 Kutch Wines Pinot Noir Bohan Vineyard

Moving to the single vineyards, the 2018 Pinot Noir Bohan Vineyard was not destemmed and saw the standard one year in neutral oak. Beautiful Burgundian notes of black cherries, dried herbs, forest floor, and darker currants all give way to a medium-bodied, firm, savory wine that has plenty of tannic grip yet pulls it off with solid mid-palate depth as well as outstanding length.

Jamie Kutch continues to make a savory, almost Old World style of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In general, these are structured, tannic wines, and short-term cellaring is advised.

2018 Kutch Wines Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Lightly colored, the 2018 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast was not destemmed and was brought up all in neutral French oak. It would be a great introduction into the wines from Kutch and has lots of stem influence as well as ripe cherry and strawberry fruit, medium-bodied richness, plenty of underlying tannins, and outstanding length. It shows the more structured, savory, yet balanced style of this team beautifully.

2018 Kutch Wines Pinot Noir Signal Ridge Vineyard

Bing cherry, pomegranate, smoke, and violet notes all define the 2018 Pinot Noir Signal Ridge Vineyard, another juicy, medium-bodied, elegant wine that plays nicely in the style of the estate. It's slightly more mid-weight texturally, yet I like the overall balance as well as structure. Give it a few years and it should keep through 2030.

2018 Kutch Wines Pinot Noir Falstaff Vineyard

Coming from a vineyard on the Sonoma Coast and not destemmed, the 2018 Pinot Noir Falstaff Vineyard is unquestionably one of the softer, more approachable wines in the lineup. Wild strawberry, passion fruits, violets, and rose petal notes all emerge from the glass, and this pretty, supple, elegant effort has rounded tannins, a great texture, and outstanding length. It also happens to be the lowest in alcohol in the lineup at 12.5%. Drink it any time over the coming 8-10 years.

2018 Kutch Wines Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch

Last of the Pinot Noirs, the 2018 Pinot Noir McDougall Ranch is one of the larger production cuvées (although these are all tiny releases) and comes from a vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. Violets, Bing cherry, strawberry, and raspberry notes as well as plenty of stem and spice emerge from the glass, and this medium-bodied, savory, complex Pinot Noir has building tannins, solid mid-palate depth, and a beautiful finish. It's possibly my favorite in the lineup and has a terrific sense of balance between its fruit, tannins, and acidity. It's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for a decade.

2018 Kutch Wines Pinot Noir Bohan Vineyard Graveyard Block

Released with a black label, the 2018 Pinot Noir Bohan Vineyard Graveyard Block is a smaller production release from the Bohan Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. As with everything here, it was not destemmed and spent a year in neutral oak. Gevrey-like notes of dark, earthy fruits, forest floor, violets, and spring flowers all emerge from the glass, and it's elegant, with ripe yet integrated tannins and a great finish. It's not far off the Falstaff Vineyard release with its slightly softer texture, yet still packs plenty of structure.

Jamie Kutch continues to make a savory, almost Old World style of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In general, these are structured, tannic wines, and short-term cellaring is advised.

2018 Kutch Wines Chardonnay Sonoma Coast

There are two Chardonnays from Kutch. Starting with the appellation 2018 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast, this spent 12 months in 25% new French oak, with the balance in used barrels. Its medium gold hue is followed by plenty of melon and pineapple fruit that turns saltier and more mineral-laced on the palate. With good concentration, medium-bodied richness and depth, and nicely integrated acidity, it's a juicy, elegant, age-worthy Chardonnay that should keep for over a decade.

2018 Kutch Wines Chardonnay Trout Gulch

Coming from the Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2018 Chardonnay Trout Gulch offers more minerality as well as rocking notes of buttered stone fruits, toasted almonds, Meyer lemons, and lots of marine-like salinity. Reminding me of a Chardonnay from Rhys with its vibrant, mineral-laced, medium-bodied style, it's another classic, age-worthy Chardonnay that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age.
