2018 Merry Edwards Winery Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley

Starting with the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc, which comes all from the Russian River Valley, it has a vivid bouquet of green citrus, flinty minerality, white figs, and sugared mint to go with a rounded, sweetly fruited style on the palate. Made in a soft, charming, ready-to-go style, drink it over the coming year or three.

2017 Merry Edwards Winery Chardonnay Olivet Lane

The 2017 Chardonnay Olivet Lane is brilliant, offering loads of caramelized peach, toasted bread, honeyed minerality, and white flower-like aromas and flavors. With medium-bodied richness, a rounded, fleshy texture, good acidity, and a great finish, it’s another undeniably delicious, already approachable Chardonnay from this team. Drink it over the coming 3-5 years.

2017 Merry Edwards Winery Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Moving to the Pinot Noirs, the 2017 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast sports a deep purple/plum color as well as a great bouquet of spiced blackberries, strawberries, scorched earth, violets, and foresty, earthy nuances. Playing in the medium-bodied, forward, sweetly fruited end of the spectrum, it has light tannins, terrific purity of fruit, and outstanding length.

2017 Merry Edwards Winery Pinot Noir Meredith Estate

From a 24-acre site in the Russian River Valley and vines planted in 1996, the 2017 Pinot Noir Meredith Estate is a standout in the lineup and has the most density as well as structure. Deep purple/ruby, with stunning notes of black raspberries, scorched earth, charcoal, crushed violets, and autumn forest floor, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, building tannins, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a great finish. This is straight-up fabulous, and while terrific today, it will be even better with a year or two of bottle age and keep for over a decade. I’d put this up with the top wines in the vintage.

2017 Merry Edwards Winery Pinot Noir Klopp Ranch

The 2017 Pinot Noir Klopp Ranch is from a mix of clones and a 37-acre vineyard planted in 1982 in the Russian River Valley. It has a smoky, ripe bouquet of mulled black fruits, licorice, roasted herbs, and chocolate, with more floral and sappy notes developing with time in the glass. It also gains freshness and vibrancy with air and is medium to full-bodied, with a deep, layered mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This sexy, seamless, classic Russian River Pinot Noir has loads to love. It needs a decant if drinking any time soon and should evolve nicely for 8-10 years with no issues.

2017 Merry Edwards Winery Pinot Noir Cuvee Charles Li

A cuvée to celebrate the birth of Merry Edwards’ second grandchild, the 2017 Pinot Noir Cuvee Charles Li was released in a heavier, engraved bottled. It has a similar level of structure to the Meredith Estate and is a darker, richer wine loaded with notions of red, black and blue fruits as well as notes of scorched earth, chocolate, crushed rocks, and Asian spices. A powerful, full-bodied effort, it has a great mid-palate, ripe, polished tannins, classic Russian River sex appeal, and a great finish. It’s another brilliant wine from this team that will keep for a decade.
