2016 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Saralee's Vineyard

More sassafras, Bing cherry, strawberry, and forest floor notes emerge from the 2016 Pinot Noir Saralee's Vineyard, which is medium-bodied and offers bright acidity, some light tannins, and a good finish. If you didn't know the style at this estate, you'd guess it was much older, yet it has a juicy vibrancy to it that makes me think it's actually going to be even better with another 2-3 years of bottle age.

All these new releases from Joseph Swan show the more evolved, complex, lightly colored style favored by the estate. The wines seem ten years older than they are, but they have terrific complexity and elegant, silky profiles. They’re certainly singular.

2016 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Dna

As to the two 2016s, the 2016 Pinot Noir DNA isn't much darker than a Tavel rosé yet has good intensity in its sweet cherry and framboise fruits as well as bay leaf, spice, mint, and forest floor aromas and flavors. Lightly textured, medium-bodied, and balanced, it's another complex, nuanced Pinot Noir that certainly has a unique style all its own.

2015 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Trenton Estate

Moving to the two 2015s releases, the 2015 Pinot Noir Trenton Estate is one of the darker hued releases in the lineup and it has a bright ruby/purple hue with almost no amber at the rim. Seeing around 30% stems and 15 months in 60% new French oak, it has a wonderful bouquet of black raspberries, dark cherries, tobacco, California bay, and chocolatey spice. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Pinot Noir with a silky, seamless texture, polished tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a great finish. I love the complexity here as well as the vibrancy in the fruit, and I think this is a small step up over the 2013. It's beautifully done and has another decade of prime drinking.

2015 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Cuvée De Trois

The 2015 Pinot Noir Cuvée De Trois comes all from the Russian River and saw around 25% stems and 11 months in 40% new French oak. Smoked black cherries, framboise, tobacco, spring flowers, autumn leaves, and a touch of herbes de Provence all define the bouquet, and this medium-bodied beauty has a silky texture, fine yet present tannins, and a great finish. It's one of the larger production releases from this estate and is well worth seeking out if you're interested in the style of this domaine.

2014 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Solas Vineyard

There are a little over two thousand cases of the 2014 Pinot Noir S?l?s Vineyard, which was mostly destemmed (75%) and brought up in 30% new barrels. As with all these releases, it has a light ruby hue as well as a great perfume of sweet cherries, rose petals, bay leaf, and sassafras. Complex and nuanced aromatically, it's medium-bodied and has a bright (almost tart) spine of acidity along with a good finish. Another singular wine from this estate, it seems older than it is, but in a good way.

2013 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Trenton View

Now at seven years after the vintage, the 2013 Pinot Noir Trenton View is quite mature and reveals a more ruby/amber color as well as a gorgeous nose of forest floor, rose petals, bay leaf, baking spices, tobacco, and sagebrush. The fruit leans firmly into the red fruited spectrum, but it shows darker tones with time in the glass and has a wonderful core of sweetness. Medium-bodied, elegant, and ethereal on the palate, its tannins are resolved and it’s beautifully balanced. This is just a wonderfully mature, complex Pinot Noir to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years.

2013 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Great Oak

As with the Trenton View release, the 2013 Pinot Noir Great Oak has a completely mature, almost amber color yet surprises with its intensity and complexity. A wine that was 77% destemmed and aged just 10 months in 30% new French oak, it offers lots of sassafras, sappy herb, mint, and bay leaf notes as well as plenty of sweet cherry fruit. This carries to a medium-bodied Pinot Noir that has a fully mature style, a core of sweet fruit, good acidity, and a clean finish. I'd probably guess it was 20 years older than it is, but it's a terrific bottle of Pinot Noir.

2013 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Trenton Estate

The 2013 Pinot Noir Trenton Estate is beautiful on all accounts. Sporting a slightly evolved yet still healthy ruby color, it gives up a smorgasbord of sassafras, mint, bay leaf, forest floor, and chocolate that gains depth and richness with time in the glass. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant style that's a joy to drink, it will probably continue evolving gracefully for another decade, yet it's showing incredibly well today. Readers looking for a complex, nuanced Pinot Noir will love this.

Coming from a site in the Russian River and all destemmed and aged in neutral oak, the 2012 Syrah Great Oak Vineyard offers a mature yet still youthful style in its blackberry and dark currant fruits as well as notes of bay leaf, bacon fat, smoked game, and peppery herbs. Complex and medium-bodied, it has a seamless texture and a great finish. This is mature Russian River Syrah done brilliantly.
