2017 Ferren Wines Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard

All destemmed and aged 18 months in one-third new French oak, the 2017 Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard has a fresher, more edgy texture to go with a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated style on the palate. It's more backward and tight, especially when compared to the Sonoma Coast release, yet still has beautiful notes of black raspberries, wild strawberries, violets, sappy herbs, and a touch of forest floor. Give it a year, and it's going to have a decade of prime drinking.

2017 Ferren Wines Pinot Noir Frei Road Vineyard

Gorgeous kirsch, toasted spices, scorched earth, forest floor, and a touch of redcurrants all emerge from the 2017 Pinot Noir Frei Road Vineyard. Coming from a site on the Sonoma Coast and all destemmed and aged 18 months in French oak (33% new), it's medium to full-bodied and has a rounded, expansive texture, plenty of structure, and a great finish. It's a beautiful, mouthfilling, layered effort from this team that will keep for at least a decade.

2017 Ferren Wines Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Moving to the reds, the 2017 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast comes from a mix of the single vineyard releases and spent 18 months in just 20% new French oak. Awesome notes of kirsch, wild strawberries, toasted spice, and flowery incense all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is supple, medium to full-bodied, and seamless on the palate. While it's a big wine, it stays beautifully balanced and elegant.

2017 Ferren Wines Chardonnay Lancel Creek Vineyard

Last of the Chardonnays, the 2017 Chardonnay Lancel Creek Vineyard offers a Chassagne-Montrachet-like bouquet of white flowers, crushed limestone, buttered pineapple, citrus oil, and liquid rock-like minerality. Rich, full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated, it comes close to matching the magical 2016 and is a tour de force in Sonoma Coast Chardonnay that's as good as anything in the vintage. Hats off to winemaker Matt Courtney for another incredible Chardonnay!

2017 Ferren Wines Chardonnay Silver Eagle Vineyard

More white flowers, brioche, honeysuckle, Meyer lemon, and apple blossom notes emerge from the 2017 Chardonnay Silver Eagle Vineyard, a remarkably pure, balanced, classic Chardonnay that does everything right. It's not as exuberant or exotic as the Frei Road yet is just pure, clean, and beautifully put together. I suspect it will also benefit from a year in bottle, but it's already hard to resist.

2017 Ferren Wines Chardonnay Frei Road Vineyard

Coming from a site on the Sonoma Coast (as do all these Chardonnays from Ferren), the 2017 Chardonnay Frei Road Vineyard was fermented and aged 12 months in one-third new French oak. Buttered pineapple, honeysuckle, caramelized lemons, and lots of floral notes all define the bouquet, and this big, rich, powerful Sonoma Coast Chardonnay has subtle oak, bright acidity, and a great finish. It's another 2017 from this team that needs a year of bottle age to come together.

2017 Ferren Wines Chardonnay Sonoma Coast

Starting with the 2017 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast, this comes from a mix of the single vineyards and spent 12 months in 20% new French oak followed by six months in stainless steel. Offering a vivid gold hue as well as a youthful, unevolved bouquet of caramelized citrus, brioche, white flowers, acacia flowers, and a touch of salinity, it's balanced, medium to full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate. This is a classic 2017 with its firm, focused, edgy, concentrated style. Give bottles another 6-12 months and enjoy over the following 7-8 years.
