2017 Black Kite Pinot Noir River Turn

The 2017 Pinot Noir River Turn has the most fruit and texture in the lineup. Lots of mulled red fruits, wild strawberry, and floral notes emerge from the glass, and it’s medium-bodied, sweetly fruited, and incredible charming. It drops off on the finish, but it’s my favorite of the three Anderson Valley releases.

2017 Black Kite Pinot Noir Stony Terrace

2017 Black Kite Pinot Noir

All three of the Pinot Noirs are from the Anderson Valley. The 2017 Pinot Noir Redwoods’ Edge is enjoyable yet has a rather linear, lean style. Solid red fruits, cola, toasted spice, and dried herb notes emerge from the glass, and it has solid balance, good purity of fruit, and solid length. I suspect it will improve with another year or two in bottle and merit a higher score.

2017 Black Kite Pinot Noir Gap’s Crown Vineyard

From a great vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, the 2017 Pinot Noir Gap’s Crown Vineyard reveals a medium ruby/purple hue as well as classic Sonoma Coast ripe strawberries and darker berry fruits as well as plenty of piney, foresty, and herbal notes, medium-bodied richness, a solid spine of acidity, and a great finish. It’s not a blockbuster, but it’s beautifully balanced and has ripe tannins as well as a great finish. One of my favorites in the lineup, it’s going to evolve gracefully for a decade.

2017 Black Kite Pinot Noir Kite’s Rest

Coming from the Anderson Valley, the 2017 Pinot Noir Kite’s Rest is a classic wine from Mendocino with its ripe black cherry and almost blue fruits as well as its firmer, more focused, structured style on the palate. With lots of spice and violet notes, a terrific sense of minerality, solid mid-palate depth, and a great finish, it’s going to benefit from a year or two of bottle age and should evolve nicely for a decade.

2017 Black Kite Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard

More dark fruits, leafy herbs, and earthy, forest floor notes emerge from the 2017 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar Vineyard, another medium-bodied, elegant wine from this team. With good acidity, ripe, present tannins, and a good finish, it’s still tight and a touch backward, but I love the overall balance here. Give it a year and enjoy though 2028.

2017 Black Kite Chardonnay Sierra Mar Vineyard

Also from the Santa Lucia Highlands, the 2017 Chardonnay Sierra Mar Vineyard offers a slightly more foursquare style, with a tighter, more backward feel as well as solid aromatics of stone fruits, toasted spice, brioche, and a touch of minerality. It has good acidity, a kiss of background oak, and good depth of fruit, yet it’s a more narrow, pinched effort. Give bottles another year or so, and it should keep for 3-4 years, possibly longer.
