2017 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Harper's Rest Estate Vineyard

Lastly, the 2017 Pinot Noir Harper's Rest Estate Vineyard comes from a site in the Russian River Valley and saw the usual 100% destemming and 11 months in one-third new French oak. Ripe cranberries, black raspberries, spring flowers, and violet notes all define this medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced 2017. It has the more linear style of the vintage yet is seamless and has plenty of fine tannins as well as a great finish. It will evolve gracefully for 10-15 years with no problems.

2017 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Two Birds Estate Vineyard

There are two black label Pinot Noirs. The 2017 Pinot Noir Two Birds Estate Vineyard reveals a ruby/purple hue that's almost opaque. Seeing the same 100% destemming, fermentation in stainless steel, and 11 months in one-third new French oak, this savory, spice, dried earth, mulberry, and coal-scented beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied, subtle background oak, good overall freshness, and a great finish. It picks up more and more sweet fruit on the mid-palate with time in the glass, has ripe tannins, and is a classic Russian River Pinot Noir that's going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for over a decade in cool cellars.

2017 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyard

A different beast from the Russian River releases, the 2017 Pinot Noir Ferrington Vineyard comes from the Anderson Valley and is one of the fresher, more Burgundian styled wines in the lineup. It offers notes of forest floor, savory red and black fruits, flowers, and sappy herbs. Tight, vibrant, and juicy on the palate, with good acidity and silky tannins, it needs air to show at its best, and my money is on it benefiting from 2-3 years of bottle age.

2017 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Joseph Swan Vineyard

This iconic site in the Russian River (Swan's bottling from this site is labeled as Trenton Estate) has yielded a translucent, ruby-hued 2017 Pinot Noir Joseph Swan Vineyard, which was destemmed and spent 11 months in one-third new French oak. A sappy, Burgundian bouquet of redcurrants, mulberries, rose petals, licorice, and crushed rocks all emerge from the glass, and its gorgeous on the palate, with medium-bodied richness, a tight yet seamless texture, an incredible se

As with the other Pinot Noirs here, it's not your standard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and shows a more subtle, ethereal style. This is a stunning Pinot Noir that I suspect will keep for 20 years or more.

2017 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Uv Lucky Well Vineyard

A classic effort, the 2017 Pinot Noir UV Lucky Well Vineyard is another fresh, focused red from Arista that has lots of mulberry and raspberry fruit as well as notes of savory herbs, dried earth, and spice. Playing in the medium-bodied, elegant end of the spectrum, with good acidity and fine yet notable tannins, it has a core of sweet fruit but almost has a Sonoma Coast-like texture and structure. Give bottles a year or two and enjoy through 2027+.

2017 Arista Winery Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

Moving to the reds, the 2017 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley was all destemmed (as are all the Pinot Noirs here) and was brought up 11 months in just 20% new French oak. Its ruby/plum and translucent hue is followed by a savory nose of mulled black cherry and currant fruits interwoven with lots of spice, forest floor, earth, and bouquet garni. Textured and medium-bodied, with good acidity and great balance, I suspect it's going to benefit from a year or two of bottle age and should have a decade or more of overall longevity.

2017 Arista Winery Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard

From one of the Grand Cru sites in the Russian River (although it's a big, diverse site), the 2017 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard saw the standard 12 months in one-third new French oak followed by six months in stainless steel. Buttered pineapple, nectarines, honeyed flowers, almond paste, toasted bread, and honeysuckle notes all emerge from the glass, and this beauty is full-bodied on the palate and flawlessly balanced. The purity of fruit is just about off the charts, and it has good acidity as well as a great mid-palate. This quintessential Russian River Chardonnay shows the classic power and richness of this appellation while also possessing freshness, elegance, and balance. Hats off to Matt Courtney for another tremendous wine.

2017 Arista Winery Chardonnay Uv El Diablo Vineyard

A bigger, richer wine, the 2017 Chardonnay UV El Diablo Vineyard comes from a great site in the Russian River. Aged a year in one-third new French oak, its medium golden hue is followed by a Meursault-like bouquet of buttered stone fruits, Meyer lemons, flower oil, crushed rock, and toasty oak. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, it has terrific acidity, flawless balance, and depth and richness to spare. It's a stunning bottle of Chardonnay that will benefit from a year in bottle and cruise for 7-8 years or more.

2017 Arista Winery Chardonnay Banfield Vineyard

One of the large single vineyard releases, the 2017 Chardonnay Banfield Vineyard comes from a site in the Russian River and was whole cluster pressed and fermented and aged 12 months in one-third new French oak. After a year, it was moved to stainless steel tanks for six months before bottling. Notes of Meyer lemons, baked apples, crushed rocks, honeyed flowers, and spice all emerge from the glass, and it's rich and full-bodied on the palate, with plenty of structure and depth as well as good acidity. More reserved and tight, it's another effort from this estate that needs a year of bottle age, but it’s loaded with potential.
