2018 Rivers Marie Chardonnay Purrington Rued Vineyard

From the Sonoma Coast, the 2018 Chardonnay Purrington Rued Vineyard is more steely and vibrant, with a crisp bouquet of pineapple, crushed citrus, honeyed flowers, and salty minerality. Medium-bodied and balanced, with juicy acidity, it has a good 7-8 years of longevity ahead of it.

2018 Rivers Marie Chardonnay Sonoma Coast

The appellation 2018 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is what you call a Killer Value! Selling for a song, it offers rich, powerful aromas and flavors of buttered orchard fruits, honeysuckle, white flowers, and orange blossom. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and offering both opulence and elegance, this is a wine to buy by the case. It should keep for 5-7 years. There are only a little over 100 cases made, so scare up bottles if you can.

2018 Rivers Marie Chardonnay Joy Road Vineyard

Crushed citrus, acacia flowers, salty minerality, and a kiss of honeysuckle all emerge from the 2018 Chardonnay Joy Road Vineyard, another vibrant, racy, yet concentrated white from this team. Not far off the style of the Purrington Rued Vineyard release with it's more focused, pretty style, it's going to keep for a decade or more.

2018 Rivers Marie Chardonnay Platt Vineyard

The 2018 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard is another salty, mineral-laced, racy Chardonnay. Notes of apple blossom, lemon curd, crushed stone, and toasted bread all flow to a medium-bodied effort that has bright yet integrated acidity, rock-solid mid-palate depth, and a great finish. It might be my favorite in the lineup.

2018 Rivers Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard

Last of the Chardonnay, the 2018 Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard comes from a site way out on the Sonoma Coast, just across the street from the Summa Vineyard, in sight of the Pacific Ocean. Apple blossom, salty minerality, white flowers, lemon blossom, and ample spice notes define the bouquet, and it's a tight, racy, yet concentrated Chardonnay with stunning purity of fruit as well as length on the finish. It's up with the top Chardonnay in the vintage and is going to have 10-15 years of longevity, a rarity in the 2018 vintage, which seems to have produced more soft, forward Chardonnay.

2018 Rivers Marie Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard

Moving to the Pinot Noirs, these are all brilliant wines. The 2018 Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard from the Anderson Valley offers a vivid ruby/purple hue as well as great aromatics of Bing cherries, raspberries, crushed violets, and crushed stone. It has the classic savoriness that's common from Anderson Valley and is medium to full-bodied, with wonderful fruit, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

2018 Rivers Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

2018 Rivers Marie Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard

On another level aromatically, the 2018 Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard has a gorgeous nose of black raspberries, lit gunpowder, spice, dried flowers, and hints of pine forest. This carries to an ethereal, elegant Pinot Noir with perfectly integrated acidity and tannins, terrific mid-palate depth, and a great finish. 2018 Rivers Marie Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge Vineyard

This great vineyard just outside the town of Occidental has a produced a rich, full-bodied 2018 Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge Vineyard. One of the deeper colored in the lineup, it offers a fruit-driven bouquet of black raspberries, black cherries, spice box, loamy earth, and underbrush. With plenty of structure, medium to full body, and a great finish, I'd give bottles 2-3 years to develop more complexity, but it should be long-lived.

2018 Rivers Marie Pinot Noir Platt Vineyard

I loved the 2017, and the 2018 Pinot Noir Platt Vineyard is even better, with a touch more density and depth. Deeply colored, it has a savory, meaty bouquet of black raspberries, scorched earth, violets, graphite, and crushed rocks. A big, powerful Pinot Noir from this brilliant team, it's full-bodied, has a seamless texture, plenty of building structure, and a great, great finish that certainly keeps you coming back to the glass. This big, rich, stacked 2018 has everything in the right place and has the depth and balance to evolve for 15 years or more.

2018 Rivers Marie Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard

The classic 2018 Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard, which comes from the estate vineyard located far out on the Sonoma Coast (you can see the Pacific on clear days) is also brilliant, offering incredible notes of iron-laced red, black, and blue fruits as well as hints of pine forest, sage, bouquet garni, and spice. It has an almost bloody, meaty character, is medium to full-bodied, has an incredible sense of purity, and ultra-fine tannins. It's the finest vintage for this cuvée I've tasted.

From the same site yet from just the original plantings, the 2018 Pinot Noir Summa Old Vines offers even more iron and iodine notions as well as gorgeous black cherry fruit, leafy herbs, bay leaf, violets, candied orange peel, and Asian spices. More tight, backward, and reserved than the straight Summa Vineyard, it's medium to full-bodied, has perfectly integrated acidity, awesome balance, and a finish that won't quit. This is a magical Pinot Noir that will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and have 30 years of overall longevity. California's answer to Grand Cru Burgundy? Here you go. There are 180 cases made. Bravo.
