2018 Cattleya Pinot Noir Belly Of The Whale

Coming from the Sun Chase Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast (Petaluma Gap region), the 2018 Pinot Noir Belly of the Whale release was 90% destemmed and spent 15 months in 35% new French oak. It’s a slightly darker, more Burgundian style of Pinot Noir with gorgeous notes of black cherries, scorched earth, violets, forest floor, and chocolaty spice all emerging from the glass. It shows a cool-climate style on the palate with medium-bodied richness, perfect balance between its fruit, tannins, and acidity, no hard edges, and a great finish. Where the Cuvee Number One is relatively upfront and approachable today, this is going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for over a decade. It delivers everything you could want from a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.

Winemaker Bibiana González Rave continues to make a rich yet elegant style of wine from a handful of sites in the Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley. Her 2018s show the quality of this great vintage.

2018 Cattleya Pinot Noir Cuvée Number One

I was able to taste two Pinot Noirs from Bibiana. Coming from the Russian River and first made in 2014, the 2018 Pinot Noir Cuvee Number One comes from a mix of the Pommard, 115, and 114 clones and was completely destemmed and aged in 30% new French oak. Its vivid ruby/purple hue is followed by a killer bouquet of ripe strawberries, raspberries, candied violets, orange peel, and sweet spices. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Pinot Noir that has loads of fruit and texture, yet shines for its elegance, silky tannins, and terrific balance. It has plenty of Russian River fruit yet is still an elegant, cool-climate styled effort.

2018 Cattleya Chardonnay Call To Adventure

All from clone 15, the 2018 Chardonnay Call To Adventure comes entirely from the Pratt Vineyard in the Russian River and spent 15 months in 50% new French oak. Offering plenty of Russian River richness in its buttered citrus, peach, and stone fruits, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate and has a kiss of background oak, wonderful balance, and a great finish. Showing more spice and brioche notes with time in the glass, give bottles a year or two and enjoy over the following 5-7 years.

2018 Cattleya Chardonnay Cuvée Number Five

Starting with the 2018 Chardonnay Cuvee Number Five, which comes all from the Sonoma Coast, this medium-hued effort offers a rich yet also fresh nose of stone fruits, honeyed minerality, Meyer lemons, and citrus pith. Still young and unevolved, with medium to full-bodied richness and bright acidity, it’s a beautiful wine that needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will drink nicely over the following decade.
