2016 Le Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

One of the best vintages ever for this cuvée, the 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz boasts knockout aromas of cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with loads of garrigue, ground pepper, earth, and licorice. It’s full-bodied and powerful, while staying light, weightless, and flawlessly balanced on the palate. It will probably merit a trip digit rating in 4-5 years and should evolve for over two decades.

2015 Le Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

The 2015 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz shows the more structured, straight style of the vintage beautifully. Classic notes of garrigue, kirsch, orange blossom, and peppery herbs all give way to a full-bodied Châteauneuf that has ripe yet present tannins, terrific balance, and one heck of a finish. It doesn’t have the blockbuster style of the 2016, yet it’s more elegant and pretty. It will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age, but it’s going to age beautifully.

2014 Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

The 2014 Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz is a more complex, medium-bodied, almost Burgundian expression of this cuvée. Lots of kirsch, green herbs, garrigue, and flowery notes all emerge from this elegant, seamless Châteauneuf that’s already drinking nicely, yet it should easily evolve for another decade or so. It’s ready to go, though.

2013 Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

The 2013 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz is more masculine and black-fruited, especially when compared to the 2014. Lots of dark fruits, smoke, scorched earth, pepper, and assorted meaty notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, fresh, focused effort. It’s up with the top wines in the vintage. It’s drinking nicely today, with its fresher style, but it too should have another decade of life.

2012 Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

I’ve always loved the 2012 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz. This sexy, upfront, exuberant effort has classic notes of kirsch and dark fruits, peppery herbs, and flowers. Ripe, full-bodied, expansive, and just a terrific drink, enjoy bottles any time over the coming decade as well.

2011 Le Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

The 2011 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz tastes like a lighter version of the 2012, or even a lighter weight 2009. Lots of sunny red fruits, kirsch, licorice, and ground pepper notes all emerge on the nose, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a rounded, powerful, yet weightless texture, and a great finish. I like it today, and it’s certainly mature, so I would opt for drinking this over the coming 7-8 years. It’s certainly more evolved than the 2012.

2010 Le Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

The 2010 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz is a bigger, richer, more structured wine, and that’s certainly the vintage. Revealing a deep ruby/plum hue as well as powerful notes of dark fruits, black licorice, scorched earth, and hot asphalt, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building tannins, and tons of concentrated fruit. It’s just now at the early stages of its prime drink window, and I suspect it will continue drinking nicely for another 10-15 years of more. If you really like your Châteauneuf du Pape mature, give this a few more years.

2009 Le Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

I loved the 2009 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz. This beauty tastes like the essence of Châteauneuf du Pape with its massive, almost over-the-top aromas and flavors of kirsch, new saddle leather, garrigue, and spicy incense. This is a sunny, incredibly Provençal, complex, full-bodied effort that’s drinking at point today, so while it certainly has another decade of life, there’s no need to delay gratification.

2007 Le Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

In the same mold as the 2009, the 2007 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz is an incredibly, sexy, Provençal, crazily perfumed beauty that could come from nowhere else. Lots of kirsch liqueur, blackberries, garrigue, licorice, and incense notes dominate the bouquet. Full-bodied, opulent, and powerful on the palate, it has sweet tannins, remarkable purity, and a great, great finish. It’s another tour de force from this estate that’s drinking at point today.

2001 Le Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

This bottle of 2001 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz was showing a more mature, evolved style than bottles from my cellar, yet it was still beautiful, with lots of kirsch and dark berry fruits, licorice, violets, and a touch of minerality on the nose. Pretty, medium to full-bodied and balanced on the palate, it’s a classy Châteauneuf du Pape in every sense that’s drinking at point today. I’d drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years, yet it will certainly have a gradual decline as well.

1999 Le Clos Du Caillou Chateauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz

Fully mature and on the backend of its prime drink window, the 1999 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Quartz offers incredibly complex notes of blackberries, new leather, spice box, and Provençal herbs. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, with notable freshness and purity, this pure class Châteauneuf du Pape isn’t going to get any better, but it should hold nicely for another 4-6 years, if not longer.
