2018 Domaine De Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Les Vignes De Bila Haut Blanc

Not yet bottled and mostly Grenache (there's a touch of Muscat, Grenache Gris, and Vermentino), the 2018 Côtes Du Roussillon Les Vignes De Bila Haut Blanc offers a rich yet fresh style that's going to shine on the dinner table. Crushed citrus, honeyed minerality, licorice, and a touch of quince all give way to a layered, ripe, polished white that has loads to love.

While falling outside the focus of this Northern Rhône report, I taste these wines every year during my visit at Chapoutier. Looking first at the 2018s, this was a cooler, wetter, and later year, and the wines show terrific purity and freshness with more medium-bodied to medium to full-bodied profiles. The 2017s come from a hot, dry year and are bigger, richer efforts.

2018 Domaine De Bila Haut Banyuls Rimage

This estate also makes a small amount of fortified wine, and the 2018 Banyuls Rimage is a year-in-year-out value wine that brings plenty of classic Banyuls character. Deep ruby/plum-hued with notes of mulled plums, blueberries, violets, cedar, and Asian spices, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, seductive, sweetly fruited style, and a great finish. It can keep for over a decade, but I like this wine in its first 4-6 years, while the fruit is upfront and juicy.

2017 Domaine De Bila Haut Collioure Chrysopee

I always love this cuvée, and the 2017 Collioure Chrysopée is a great example of the appéllation. Black cherries, framboise, iodine, salty minerality, and plenty of floral notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, finesse-oriented wine that reminds me of a Côte Rôtie from the southern part of the appellation.

2017 Domaine De Bila Haut Cotes Du Roussillon Villages Latour De France Visitare Interiore Terrae (VIT)

Deeply colored, with beautiful currants, chocolate, dried earth, and ground herbs, the 2017 Côtes Du Roussillon Villages Latour De France Visitare Interiore Terrae is full-bodied and has a rounded, sexy, opulent texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It’s a much more opulent, Southern Rhône styled effort compared to the more Syrah-dominated RI release.
