2017 Crown Point Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

There's a single barrel of the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, which is 100% Clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon that’s still resting in new oak. Thrilling notes of blackcurrants, espresso, chocolate, toasted spice, and smoked earth notes all emerge from this opulent, powerful, full-bodied effort. With ample tannins, a big, deep, powerful style, and a great finish, it tastes like a hypothetical mix of the estate and Cabernet Sauvignon releases.

2017 Crown Point Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

More camphor, cassis, spicy oak, graphite, and minerality emerge from the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon. More compact, concentrated, and chiseled on the palate, with beautiful purity, tons of tannins, and a great finish, I think it's a step up over the estate selection, but it's built for the long haul. This cuvée checks in as 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, and the balance Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.

2017 Crown Point Vineyards Estate Selection

The 2017 Estate Selection is terrific, with the vintage’s slightly more fresh, focused style. Lots of cassis and currant fruits as well as spice, chocolate, and tobacco all emerge from this more medium to full-bodied, concentrated, nicely balanced, structured wine. A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 13% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, it will spend 26 months in 75% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels.

2016 Crown Point Vineyards Estate Selection

Deeply colored, the 2016 Estate Selection checks in as 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec that was brought up 26 months in 75% new French oak. Deeply colored, it has a smoking good bouquet of crème de cassis, smoke tobacco, lead pencil, camphor, and hints of chocolate. This gives way to a powerful, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon that has plenty of sweet tannins, a layered, multi-dimensional texture, no hard edges, and an awesome finish. I’d happily put this beauty in a lineup of top Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and blends.

2016 Crown Point Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated cuvée is the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon (92% Cabernet Sauvignon with tiny amounts of the other varieties on the property). It’s cut from the same cloth as the Estate Selection, yet with just a touch more classic Cabernet blue fruits, purity, and precision. Blackcurrants, cassis, crushed violets, graphite, and lead pencil notes all give way to a powerful, concentrated, beautifully pure Cabernet that has ultra-fine tannins, a seamless texture, building tannins, and a great, great finish. It's another magical wine from this team that's going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.
