Kate Janecek’s journey into wine began in Toronto, Canada, with an unfortunate accident involving a bottle of Château Pétrus in her uncle’s cellar. Although the bottle did not survive the encounter, the experience became an unexpectedly memorable starting point for a lifelong fascination with wine.
After earning a degree in Fine Art History from the University of Toronto, Kate moved to Europe in 2007 with a simple goal: to work in wine. That ambition took her across vineyards and wine regions and through more than a few tight budgets before she landed in Dublin, where an internet search for the world’s best wine merchant led her to Berry Bros. & Rudd. After several persistent emails, she secured a position with the historic firm, beginning a career that would take her deep into the world of fine wine.
Kate’s early years at Berry Bros. & Rudd in Dublin and London laid a foundation in the global wine trade before she moved into fine wine buying at Justerini & Brooks. Working closely with producers across Europe, she developed a particular affinity for France and the new generation of winemakers redefining some of the country’s most historic regions. From Burgundy and Chablis to the Loire Valley and the Rhône, she became fascinated by producers who balance tradition with innovation, often pushing beyond established conventions in pursuit of greater quality and expression.
A subsequent move to Acker Wines introduced Kate to the world of fine-wine auctions, where she gained extensive experience evaluating mature vintages, building collections, and tasting some of the world’s most sought-after wines alongside leading producers and collectors.
Today, Kate runs a bespoke wine consultancy in Bordeaux, where she advises high-net-worth collectors and curates exceptional Bordeaux and Burgundy cellars. Living in the heart of one of the world’s great wine regions allows her to remain immersed in the evolving landscape of fine wine while providing firsthand insight into the vineyards, vintages, and market forces shaping today’s industry.
As a contributor to JebDunnuck.com, Kate brings a buyer’s perspective to wine criticism, blending deep market knowledge with firsthand experience in Europe’s vineyards and cellars. Her writing covers both established benchmarks and emerging talents, with a particular focus on the producers shaping the future of France’s most important wine regions.
When she is not tasting wine, Kate can usually be found exploring great European restaurants, traveling with her family, or spending time with her cat, Michelin. Nearly two decades after she accidentally dropped a bottle of Château Pétrus, her uncle has finally forgiven her, and her wine career has recovered nicely.
